This week the Scottish Cartoon Art Studio celebrates 13 years in business. Here’s some of the recent feedback we’ve had from customers.

“The caricature you did for us went down a storm… Becoming very popular, will be in touch again soon.” – City Property Glasgow

“Was fab guys, loved it. Thanks very much you are genius!” – Tesco Bank

“Thank you so much for the caricature, you did a fantastic job! It was so like Andrew and I’m glad you managed to cleverly get all the wee things that represent him into the picture. Everyone loved it, as did Andrew.” – Business Stream

“Thank you so much for your fabulous drawings and entertainment at our wedding . Every single drawing was brilliant and our guests all raved about it with quite a few appearing as Facebook profile pictures. We also have some great pictures of them for our wedding album which is a great reminder of the details of our day.” – Joanne & Neil, Glasgow

“The caricature is fantastic and I’d like to thank you very much for all the work you put in. The level of detail is amazing and I hadn’t expected you to get as much into the picture. I’m sure that the family will love it.” – Michael, Stirling

“Just wanted to thank you for our drawing. It was a great wee present for us. We absolutely love it! Keep up the good work” – Gamen & Kevin, Sydney, Australia

In the coming weeks we’ll be announcing our events for the summer season. As usual you can expect to see us caricaturing at a variety of galas and fun days around the country. There will be more cartoon workshops for children and a special project coinciding with the Olympic Games. We’ll be making further updates and improvements to the website too. Lots to look forward to!

The Scottish Cartoon Art Studio will collaborate with writer Kirtsin Zhang on a new project throughout the spring and summer of this year. Inspired by the national initiative “Year of Creative Scotland 2012″ Creative Communities is a community project hosted by St Columba’s School which aims to encourage people, especially young people, to enjoy the power of storytelling. Stories, of course, are not limited to the written word. They can be told in song, a six-frame cartoon, a photograph or a film.

People live and leave their stories and a community is a place where stories collect. In discovering and animating the stories of the people and the place we share our hopes, our fears, and our histories. We entertain, we teach and we learn.

We’ve just finished developing “Olympic Superghero” strips with P7 pupils at Kilmacolm Primary; look for those to appear on the Creative Communities site soon. More on this project in the coming weeks.

Kirstin Zhang

Following a MLitt, Kirstin has completed the first year of a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow. In 2005 she won the Scotsman Orange Short Story Award and in 2007 was shortlisted for the Harper’s Bazaar and Orange Short Story Prize. She has recently been commissioned to write a Japanese fairy story for New Fairy Tales, which will be published in 2012.

Our Brian turned 40 recently and the rest of us took the opportunity to draw him. Comparing the different caricatures you can see common threads in the likenesses as well as choices unique to each artist’s interpretation.

As ever, our caricatures make great gifts for any occasion. Get in touch to find out more.

Today 2000AD celebrates 35 years in print. The comic emerged when most of us here were kids and so looms large in the imagination. Of the various strips and characters featured over the years Strontium Dog and Nemesis the Warlock are particular favourites here, but there’s no denying the appeal of Judge Dredd. We’ve high hopes for the new movie. Here’s Derek’s tongue-in-cheek take on the character…

It’s hard to imagine the “British Invasion” of talent into American comics – Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons, Kevin O’Neill, John McCrea, Duncan Fegredo, Glasgow’s own Grant Morrison, Mark Millar & Frank Quitely and a host of others – without 2000AD being there to showcase their work. For a brief time we played a tangental role in the history of the comic; former “art droid” Alex Ronald was with us for couple of years and produced pages for 2000AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine in our original premises .

Hats off to Pat Mills, John Wagner and the host of “Thargs” who followed. Long may the title continue.

Chris Sommerville has combined his love of football and caricature in a book featuring contributions from guest artists and an introduction by Frank Quitely, illustrator on such world-famous comics as New X-Men, Batman & Robin and the forth-coming Jupiter’s Children. So whether your first love is the beautiful game, you’re an aficionado of cartoon art or you simply like a laugh, WORLD CUP LEGENDS is the book for you.
